Montevecchia – Lecco
On the top of Montevecchia’s hill the sanctuary of Beata Vergine del Carmelo offers an extraordinary panorama on the Brianza area
The sanctuary of Beata Vergine del Carmelo is placed just on the top of the hill of Montevecchia and you can reach it only on foot along a stairway of 180 steps. In its final part there is the path of Via Crucis dated back to 17th century, with its sandstone niches.
It represent one of the most evocative sanctuary dedicated to Virgin Mary’s cult in Brianza, thanks to its special location granting an extraordinary panorama on the Alps Orobie and Pianura Padana.
It was built in early 17th century and presents a tyical Baroque structure with an elegant portico with cross vaults sustained by granite columns. It has a unique rectangular nave on which sides there are some altars.
Inside you can find frescoes dated back to 17th century, depicting St. Antony’s life and a series of eight paintings representing St. John The Baptist’s life. Other important elements are: the wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus dated back to 16th century and a mobile Baroque canopy of inlaid and golden wood. This canopy is used to host the Beata Vergine del Carmelo during procession.
