The shrine dedicated to Virgin Mary’s devotion was promoted to basilica by Pope John XXIII.
The shrine of Madonna del Bosco in Imbersago is one of the most famous Marian sanctuaries in all Lombardy, due to its link to Pope John XXIII that promoted it to basilica.
The shrine is a great example of Lombardy Baroque and it is placed in the river Adda’s valley on a hill offering a panoramic view. It was built up where three young shepherds view the Holy Virgin “among heavenly lights and magnificence and harmonious melodies” on 9th may 1967.
The octagonal temple was built in 1645 and overlooks the Saint Staircase of 349 steps dated back to early Nineteenth century, on whose top there is the Bronze statue of Pope John XXIII, unveiled by Cardinal Montini, then Pope Paul VI. Close to the shrine there is the room of Blessed Cardinal Schuster.
