The Ornithological Station of Costa Perla is placed in the Monte Barro Regional Park on the top of a moraine of Monte Barro.
The station carries out scientific and educational activities oriented to bird’s migrations study.
Monte Barro is in a strategic position regarding to the migration routes of birds because of its position on the Lake Como.
Thanks to its rich wildlife of invertebrates living its pastures, Monte Barro is a perfect place and feeding area for birds before and afte crossing the Alps . Birds are catched by nets then ringed and measured before being release and set free. Up todate 30.000 birds belonging to 88 different species have been marked, some of them have been found in European and African localities.
Among the most typical birds of the Park we mention the goatsucker (Caprimulgus europaeus) visible in the pastures, the brown kite (Milvus migrans) with its colony on Monte Barro’s cliffs and the horned owl (Otus scops).
