Legnone mountain
Hiking trail in Lombardia on Legnone mountain. Path from Pagnona to Rifugio Griera, walking alon the military trail.
A nice hiking trail on Legnone, the highest mountain in the province of Lecco with its 2609 meters, overlooking lake Como, in northern Lario where the Adda river flows in.
Our trail to Rifugio Griera starts from Pagnona, a small village placed where Valvarrone begins and Valsassina ends, close to the enchanting village of Premana.
This is an easy excursion, also suitable for families with trained children. Walking time: about 2 hours and half..
How to get to Premana?
You havve 2 possibilities: driving along the SS36 , that runs along Lake Como or choosing to take the SP62 leading us directly to Valsassina. Travel time is quite the same: approx: 40 minutes.
Note – SS36 is used by those who choose to go to Valtellina and northern Lario.
So… we give you some info:
- if you choose SS36 from Lecco, continue in the direction of Colico and take Bellano exit, just after leaving the tunnel; then follow direction Taceno-Valsassina. Once you reach Taceno, follow the signs for Premana and finally for Pagnona, where you’ll find a parking area at the end of via Roma. Another one is located near the church of Sant’Andrea.
- If, however, coming from Milan you decide to continue towards Valsassina along the SP62, at the exit of the tunnel in Ballabio, turn right and continue straight along the provincial road to Introbio. Take exit Primaluna, Cortenova, Crandola, Casargo towards Premana and then towards Pagnona.

Itinerary description
Good! Here we are in Pagnona, ready to begin our trail!
We start walking along the mule track from via Concordato. The signs indicate Alpe Subiale, Bedoledo, Monte Legnone and Rifugio Griera as well, our destination.
We walk up to reach and overcome a nucleus of houses, and then continue in the meadows. The trail is visible and bordered by a wooden fence. After about 20 minutes we get to Alpe Subiale, a mountains pasture at 1000 meters. Here we can refresh at the fountain.
We get our hiking trail, which climbs to another mountain pasture: Bedoledo. We reach it in about fifteen minutes, climbing a stairway.
Are you tired due to the sloping path you made? Quiet, now the path from Bedoledo is quite flat. We enters the woods until to reach a crossroads indicating Alpe Campo on the left and Direttissima Casniella on the right.
We take the path on the left, which alternates trails in woods of larch trees to open ones, until to reach the old military trail, offering us spectacular views of Lake Como and Legnone in front of us.
Our walk continues along the mule track towards Alpe Campo (1647 m): walking time about half an hour. We’re close to our destination as it remains only 10 minutes to get to Rifugio Griera (1725 m).
Now we can have a rest and relax ourselves, enjoying a 360° panorama that offers us all the natural beauty of this land. Our eyes go from Lake Como to Alpe di Paglio in Valsassina, just in front of us, to Pizzo dei tre Signori, and then to the horizon where we can distinguish Monte Rosa and Lake Lugano.
