Piazza XX Settembre is the square in the heart of the old town center of Lecco, long and narrow is enclosed between two wings of buildings, which make it cozy and protective.
Walking or staying in the square you clear see the neoclassical style of the Lecco architect Giuseppe Bovara well visible in the palaces with porticoes. Just in one of these buildings the geologist Antonio Stoppani was born in 1824 , a plaque tells the place at civic number 43.
Piazza XX Settembre is the square where Azzone Visconti wanted the castle of the fortified village was built, nowadays we have just the Viscontea Tower as remain. The coat of arms of the Visconti family is also apparent on the wall of Palazzo delle Paure, art museum center and venue of the Lecco Mountaineering Observatory.
The Viscontea Tower and Palazzo delle Paure belong to the Civic Museum of Lecco and in particular host temporary art exhibitions.
Piazza XX Settembre is also located in the middle of two other squares: Piazza Cermenati, which opens onto the lake of Lecco and Piazza Garibaldi, where the Teatro della Società is located.
Walking through the central via Roma, where shops overlooking, you arrive to Piazza Manzoni where there is the monument to Alessandro Manzoni, which made Lecco world-wide famous thanks to his masterpiece The Betrothed.
