Colico on Lake Como: the land of kitesurfing
Experience the mix of nature, history and faith
Colico is the northern town of the province of Lecco and is located on Lake Como in a strategic point regarding communication, in fact here in Colico several roads intersect: the SS 36 which connects Milan and Brianza with Lake Como and Valchiavenna and the SS 38 Stelvio that runs through the Valtellina and leads in Trentino Alto Adige. If you reach Colico by car you drive to the so-called “trivium of Fuentes.”
Thanks to its strategic aspect in the seventeenth century the Count of Fuentes, the Spanish governor, built the Forte of Fuentes, to control the roads. Alessandro Manzoni tells us about it in The Betrothed. Unfortunately Napoleon made it destroy, but today it is possible to visit the ruins of the fort and to be fascinated by the taste of history.
Not far away we can visit Forte Montecchio Nord, to the best preserved military fort in Europe. It was built for the First World War.
The four cannons are still fully functional and you can also enjoy a stunning view on lake Como and the Alps.
But Colico is not only synonymous with fortresses, it hosts a site of European community interest: the nature reserve Pian di Spagna, a natural environment rich in fauna and flora where you can walk in nature. We are certain you will be impressed. It’s particularly suitable for families with children.
And just few minutes far from Colico, on the hill of Olgiasca, can discover and visit the Piona Abbey with is wonderful cloister.
Colico means Lake Como: beautiful lakefront where you may walk or just sit down at a cafè or restaurant enjoying the fantastic landscapes around you.
When you think of Colico, you also think to its beaches, where you can relax and also look at the colorful kitesurf dancing as dragonflies on the lake.
The concentration of kitesurfer in Colico area is very high. In 2006 and 2007 Colico also hosted the Italian round of the World Championship kitesurf.
