When we talk about Lierna at once we think of its spectacular beach of Riva Bianca, a white tongue with a unique landscape to live and admire.
Lierna is a small town on Lake Como, we can define it a little pearl of the Lario.
Next to Riva Bianca we find the tower of the castle of Lierna, built in the Romanesque period, and challenged by Milan and Como in the communal period. The Lombard Queen Teodolinda stayed there for a long time. This hamlet of Lierna tells us its past medieval village: the internal streets have remained unchanged over time, as well as some of the facades of the houses. You breathe something special while walking here.
A curious gem – right in this hamlet of the Castle of Lierna castle was shooted the scene “Farewell mountains sources …” of The Betrothed by Bolchi with Nino Castlenuovo, actor of Lecco, as Renzo.
Walking in this hamlet we find the church dedicated to Saints Maurice and Lazarus, which hosts inside frescoes of the fifteenth century. This small church has ancient origins, in fact was erected in ancient Rome and has a peculiarity: its apse faces lake Como as a protective stronghold and the access is within the castle walls. It was used to carry out religious functions also under siege.
In this church, 22 January 1573, Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy founded the Order of the Savoy dynasty, called the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, nowadays still existing, in memory of which there is a bronze bell bearing the emblem of the Order of the Royal House of Italy.
But Lierna is not only the hamlet on lakefront, it is crossed by woods on the hill along which runs the Wayfarer’s trail, which connects Lecco with Colico.
In addition to the hamlet of Castello, the best known and renowned for its unique landscape, Lierna has eleven other fractions rich in stories, each with its own church.
